KGMU Celebrates 12th International Day of Yoga 2026 with Focus on “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”

Lucknow: In a grand celebration of health, wellness, and holistic living, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) observed the 12th International Day of Yoga with a series of activities centered on the global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The month-long initiative underscored the importance of yoga in fostering physical fitness, mental well-being, and healthy ageing across all sections of society.

The celebrations, which commenced on May 21 and culminated on June 21, transformed the university campus into a vibrant hub of yogic practice and wellness awareness. Students, faculty members, healthcare professionals, staff, and members of the local community participated enthusiastically in a range of events designed to promote the benefits of yoga as a preventive and therapeutic healthcare tool.

A major highlight of the observance was the mass yoga session held at Sardar Patel Ground, where hundreds of participants gathered in the early morning hours to perform Surya Namaskar, common yoga protocols, Pranayama, and meditation exercises. The collective practice reflected the growing acceptance of yoga as an essential component of a healthy lifestyle.

Demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity, KGMU also organized special Yoga Abhyas Shivirs for persons with disabilities at the PMR Department (LIMB Centre). These dedicated sessions aimed to make yoga accessible to all, highlighting its potential to improve mobility, mental health, and overall quality of life regardless of physical limitations.

The month-long programme featured a diverse array of themed activities, including expert-led workshops, awareness lectures, water yoga sessions, poster-making and slogan-writing competitions, and interactive discussions focusing on the role of yoga in healthy ageing. Participants were educated about the scientific evidence supporting yoga’s effectiveness in reducing stress, enhancing immunity, preventing lifestyle-related diseases, and improving overall well-being.

Adding a unique dimension to the celebrations, Radio KGMU Goonj 89.6 MHz provided extensive live coverage of the events. The university’s community radio station broadcast motivational talks, guided yoga sessions, and expert discussions, extending the message of wellness to listeners across Lucknow and neighbouring areas.

Senior faculty members and yoga experts emphasized that regular yoga practice can play a crucial role in addressing age-related health challenges, promoting emotional balance, and improving quality of life. They noted that yoga’s holistic approach aligns closely with modern healthcare goals focused on prevention, rehabilitation, and long-term wellness.

Speaking on the occasion, university officials reiterated KGMU’s commitment to integrating traditional wellness practices with modern medical education and patient care. They stressed that yoga represents a valuable bridge between India’s rich cultural heritage and contemporary evidence-based healthcare.

KGMU continues to champion holistic health initiatives that complement conventional medicine. The successful observance of International Day of Yoga 2026 reinforced the university’s dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles and advancing the message that yoga can contribute significantly to healthy ageing and improved quality of life.

The celebrations concluded with a collective pledge by participants to incorporate yoga into their daily routines, embracing its benefits for a healthier body, calmer mind, and more vibrant life at every age.
